Child Care Subsidy (CCDF): How to Get Free or Low-Cost Daycare in 2026
Full-time daycare costs $10,000–$24,000/year per child in most US states. Most families can't afford that on a single or even dual low-income paycheck. That's where the Child Care Subsidy (also called CCDF, Child Care Scholarship, or Working Family child care) comes in.
The state pays most of the bill directly to your chosen provider. You pay a small copay based on your income — sometimes as little as $5/week.
1. Who qualifies for the child care subsidy
You usually qualify if all of these are true:- You're working, in training, or in school (typically 20+ hrs/week)
- Your household income is at or below 85% of your state's median income (roughly 200% of FPL — about $62,400/year for a family of 4)
- Your child is under 13 (or under 19 with a disability)
2. What kind of care is covered
- Licensed daycare centers
- Licensed family home providers
- Pre-K and preschool programs
- Before- and after-school care
- Summer programs for school-age kids
- In some states, even care by relatives (grandma, aunt)
3. Documents you'll need
- Photo ID and SSN for the parent
- Birth certificates for your children
- Proof of employment/training/school (pay stubs, school schedule, training enrollment)
- Proof of income (last 30 days)
- Lease or utility bill (proof of residence)
4. How to apply
Every state runs its own version. Find yours in our state directory — click your state, then scroll to "Childcare & Family".Typical timeline:
- Application: 30–40 minutes online
- Approval: 15–30 days
- Starting care: as soon as approval comes in
5. Choosing a provider
Once approved, your state gives you a list of qualifying providers in your zip code. You choose.Pro tip: Ask "do you accept [your state's program name] subsidies?" — any legitimate provider will say yes and handle the paperwork.
6. What about Head Start and state pre-K?
These are separate programs. Head Start is free for families under 100% FPL, with child age 3–5. Many families qualify for both CCDF and Head Start — use CCDF for wraparound care and Head Start for core hours.7. If you're rejected
- Appeal within 30 days (no lawyer needed)
- Try again in 3 months (income changes)
- Check if your workplace has a Dependent Care FSA ($5,000/yr pre-tax)
