Unemployment Benefits by State in 2026: Amounts, Weeks, and How to File
How much unemployment pays in every US state. Weekly amounts from $235 to $1,015, how long benefits last, and how to file for the fastest payout.
Lost your job? Unemployment Insurance (UI) pays you a portion of your old wages while you look for work. Average weekly benefit: $385. Top state: Massachusetts ($1,015/week). Bottom: Mississippi ($235/week).
File within 7 days of your last day of work
The sooner you file, the sooner you get paid. There's often a "waiting week" — the first week you're unemployed doesn't count toward your benefits.
How much you'll get
Most states pay ~50% of your recent wages, up to a state maximum. Rough weekly max by state:
MA, WA, NJ: $900–$1,015
CA, NY, IL, MN: $450–$780
TX, FL, GA, NC: $275–$450
MS, AL, AZ, LA: $235–$275
How long it lasts
Federal standard is 26 weeks. 12 states cut it shorter (Florida = 12 weeks, Alabama = 14). A few states extend during high unemployment.
4 things you must do every week
Certify: File a weekly or bi-weekly claim — if you forget, you don't get paid. UnifiedAid sends free reminders.
Log work searches: Most states require 2–5 applications per week.
Report earnings: If you do any work (gig, freelance, part-time), you must report it.
Be available for full-time work.
Why applications get denied
Fired for cause (vs. laid off) — if your employer can prove misconduct, you're denied
Quit voluntarily — only qualifies if you quit "for good cause" (harassment, medical, unsafe conditions)
Missed certifications — skip a week, lose your claim in most states
Wrong income reported — be precise about pay stubs
Appeal if denied
You have 10–30 days to appeal (varies by state). Appeals win about 30% of the time. Don't give up.
