Pell Grant 2026: Maximum $7,395 That You Don't Pay Back
The 2026 Pell Grant offers up to $7,395 for college that you never repay. Eligibility, how to file FAFSA fast, and how to stack with state aid.
The Federal Pell Grant is free money for college that you never have to repay. The 2026 max is $7,395/year. About 6.5 million students get one annually.
How to get one
Fill out the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) — only way to apply.
Pell is awarded automatically if you qualify; no separate Pell application.
The earlier you file (FAFSA opens October 1 each year), the more aid you get.
Eligibility
Undergraduate student
US citizen or eligible non-citizen
Have HS diploma or GED
Enrolled in an eligible program
Demonstrated financial need (EFC typically < $7,000)
What if your family makes too much?
"Too much" for Pell usually means your family's Adjusted Gross Income is above ~$60K. But:
If you're independent (24+, married, or have dependents), only your income counts.
Selective Service registration is required if male.
If your parents didn't file taxes, you can still apply.
Stack with state aid
Pell + state grants can cover 100% of community college tuition in 40+ states. Examples:
California: Cal Grant A = up to $13,896 at UCs
Texas: TEXAS Grant = up to $5,195
Florida: Bright Futures = up to $211/credit hour
New York: TAP = up to $5,665
Documents you'll need
SSN (yours + parents' if dependent)
Driver's license
2024 tax return (for 2026 FAFSA)
Bank statements
Investment records (if any)
Common mistakes
Not filing every year — Pell requires a new FAFSA annually
Late filing — state deadlines are often earlier than federal
Missing signatures — both student and (if dependent) parent must sign
Wrong school codes — add every school you'd consider
Don't lose it
Pell Grant has a 12-semester lifetime limit. If you drop out, those semesters still count.
